Northridge swimming filling spots, still has stars

Elkhart Truth photo/Sam HouseholderElkhart Central's Austin Dreamer swims the 100 butterfly, which he won with a time of :57.67, during a swim meet against Goshen at the Elkhart Central pool on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015.

Coming off a fourth-place finish at the IHSAA boys swimming and diving State Finals in February, Northridge coach Joe Keller will be in a bit of a rebuilding mode for the 2016-17 season.

Well, almost as much as you need to rebuild with a strong program like Northridge's.

"We're currently ranked No. 4 in the preason rankings, so I think it's more of a replacement process,'' Keller said. "But we will have to replace a lot of leadership from last season's team and that will be a challenge. We'll also have to determine the end of season relay teams, but we are fortunate to have a lot of options.''

The Raiders' lineup starts with a state champion, as Spencer Lehman returns for his senior year after winning the 500-yard freestyle last winter. Lehman, who has signed with Indiana University, also finished second in the 200 IM.

Senior Camden Koch is also a top returnee after winning the backstroke at the sectional last year, while also being a key part of two strong relays. Classmates Matthew Vancoppenolle, who has signed with Saginaw Valley, and Tristan Adami will also be counted on, as will junior Connor Glenn, who finished fourth in the state in the 500.

After going all of last season without a diver, Keller is high on the potential of freshman Terik Jenkins.

Concord coach Tom Johnson must replace two strong seniors in Stephen Krecsmar and diver DaeQuan Quinn. Krecsmar was a three-time state qualifier and is now swimming at Villanova, while Quinn finished seventh at state last year.

The Minutemen return senior Shawn Stauffer and sophomore Kal Findley, each coming back off strong seasons, as well as junior diver Austin Leas, who just missed qualifying for regional last season.

Elkhart Central coach Michelle Guipe returns for her second season, as the Blue Blazers look to challenge Northridge and Concord for the top two spots in sectional competition.

Junior diver Logan Brown returns after a 10th-place finish at state. Juniors Adam Krauter and Chris Quarandilio and sophomore Carter Rief also return. In addition, Guipe has 12 freshman out this year.
