FORT WORTH, Texas — The Firestone 600 has been re-scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27, as heavy rainfall at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend has soaked the racing surface.

Showers began to fall at 2:42 p.m. Sunday, which halted the race after 71 laps. The race must have completed 125 laps of 248 scheduled to become official.

With more rain in the forecast Monday, IndyCar and track officials opted to re-schedule the race for late August.

Rain wreaked havoc all weekend. It had been originally scheduled to go at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, but heavy downpour earlier that day made IndyCar and track officials postpone it to Sunday.

The scheduled start time of 1:06 p.m. Sunday had to be delayed until 1:49 p.m. because of drainage issues to get the racing surface ready. A horrific accident involving Josef Newgarden and rookie Conor Daly on Lap 42 also delayed the race several minutes. Daly walked away from the crash under his own power, while Newgarden had to be transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas for further evaluation.

Newgarden is expected to be OK, according to IndyCar officials. That is about the only good news that came out of the weekend.

“You can’t beat Mother Nature,” TMS president Eddie Gossage said. “It doesn’t matter if you have 100 jet trucks, you aren’t going to be able to do anything about that. It’s been a very frustrating weekend for all of us involved in the IndyCar Series.”

This is the third time in the track’s history that an IndyCar race hasn’t been completed on its scheduled day.
