SOUTH BEND —Tyren Mason recorded four official touches Friday night — all of them eventful, with two going for long touchdowns, another resulting in a 64-yard punt return and another producing a muff that was saved by a teammate — yet the bulk of the chatter outside the Elkhart locker room after the Lions’ 49-6 high school football blowout of South Bend St. Joseph concerned a pass to Mason that was ruled an incompletion.

“Did you catch that ball?” curious teammates asked him on at least two occasions of the second-quarter bomb attempt from quarterback Cam Wiltfong.

So Elkhart has an awesome football team. That is great. They are allowed to gather every day for hours at a time, unmasked to practice. All the while the rest of the students, teachers and parents must adjust their lives, families and schedules to learn online because it is not safe to have full time in school learning While wearing masks. I am trying to understand the hypocrisy of this situation. Evidently, the school board values football over education. The board should be ashamed. The football team can practice but not the band members? What sense does this make?
