GOSHEN — Goshen College senior cross country runner Ryan Smith has been named NAIA Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

A graduate of Central Noble, Smith has broken his own school record three times this fall and owns the top nine times in school history. His current standard of 24:41.5 earned him a 25-second victory at the Crossroads League meet earlier this month. His time was the second-fastest in the nation recorded by an NAIA runner.

Smith finished 33rd in the nation last year and hopes to improve on that mark Saturday at the NAIA Nationals in Elsah, Ill.
