Spring sports preview: Another season for Elkhart County area baseball, softball, track, golf and tennis athletes to make their mark

JIMTOWN — Nick Floyd, a Jimtown High School senior, is scheduled to sign Thursday, Nov. 13, to continue his academic and baseball careers at NCAA Division I Ball State University.

Floyd, a varsity pitcher for three years, has helped the Jimmies win two straight Northern State Conference titles for coach Darin Mast and will try for a third in the spring.

In 2014, the right-hander won five games with a 1.65 earned run average and a Truth area-leading 78 strikeouts. He also hit .382. He was named a team MVP and to the all-NSC team.

"He's probably the smartest pitcher I've ever coached," says Mast. "Every pitch he throws, he has a purpose for it. He's got great off-speed stuff to go with a fastball. When he's on, he's very tough to beat."

Floyd, who plays summer baseball for the Indiana Chargers, also plays tennis and basketball at Jimtown.

Ball State, coached by Rich Maloney, went 39-18 overall and 22-4 in the Mid-American Conference in 2014.
