ELKHART — Mariam Shahnasarian, 93, passed away in Elkhart, after an extended illness at 3:03 a.m. June 7, 2019.

Mariam was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Vechirky, Poltavs’ka, Ukraine, to Sergei and Eugenia Saharian.

She was studying to be a doctor in Germany, however she had to cease her studies in order to emigrate to the United States with her family.

In 1953, she married the late Leon Shahnasarian. Mariam supported her family and her husband, Leon, throughout his career in the recreational vehicle industry and his acceptance into the RV Hall of Fame.

She is survived by her son, George (the late Karen) Shahnasarian, as well as three granddaughters, Tania (Andrew) Forsman, Alissa (James) Hudson, and Alexandra (Jeff) Smith, and great-granddaughters Ella and Charlotte and great-srandsons Cannon and Gabriel.

She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law along with nieces and nephews.

Mariam, a life master in bridge, was a 50-year member of Elcona Country Club in Elkhart where she was an avid golfer and bridge player.

Mariam also worked as a volunteer at Elkhart General Hospital.

She is remembered as having been modest, generous, sharp-witted, honest, a great cook, and loving – down to her very core, and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Armenian All Saints Apostolic Church, 1701 Greenwood Road, Glenview, IL 60026, or the John Purdue Club Student Athlete Scholarships, Mackey Arena, 900 John R. Wooden Drive, Suite 2200, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2078.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at Muzyka & Son Funeral Home, 5776 W. Lawrence Ave., Chicago.

Interment Irving Park Cemetery.
