GOSHEN — A 12-year-old boy involved in a dirt bike crash last week died Monday, according to a Facebook post made by Goshen Middle School.
Malachi Southern, a recent sixth-grade graduate of the school, was hospitalized following the crash that left him in critical condition a week ago Monday evening.
“Malachi was a bright, funny boy who was well-liked by his classmates,” the post said. “Through organ donation, Malachi has already helped save the lives of 3 adults.”
Around 8:30 p.m., Goshen police said, Southern failed to stop at a stop sign at William Drive and Colonial Manor Drive and was hit by a Ford Escape.
An on-scene investigation indicated that Southern struck the windshield of the vehicle. Officers found the boy’s helmet next to the youth with the chin strap not buckled, according to police.
Southern was unconscious when first responders got to the scene. He was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
Students or families who need support in processing this loss are encouraged to contact Goshen Middle School, where counselors will be available Wednesday and Thursday, the school post said. This Monday, the grief support center Ryan’s Place will be available.
Ryan’s place can be contacted at 574-535-1000. School staff can also connect families with additional community resources as needed.
