ELKHART — A semi truck crashed into a traffic lights pole at the intersection of Nappanee Street (S.R. 19) and Mishawaka Road at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, halting traffic.

The semi was driving south on Nappanee Street and was turning right onto Mishawaka Road when it went up on the curb and struck the pole about four inches up, according to Public Information Officer Lt. Travis Snider with the Elkhart Police Department

The crash knocked over the mast, which was caught by wires, leading lights and wires to dangle a few feet above ground. Part of the intersection was shut down and traffic was rerouted for several hours.

Snider said at 3 p.m. Thursday that the intersection would be fully open shortly, but that it would be with stop signs rather than traffic lights, as it will take a day or two to get new poles transported to Elkhart.
