Thunderstorms cut power to thousands

Strong winds toppled this tree in the 300 block of Lincolnway East in Mishawaka before moving into Elkhart County on Wednesday.

ELKHART — A powerful line of thunderstorms uprooted trees and knocked down power lines Wednesday, forcing the first day of school to be delayed for Elkhart students.

“Due to widespread power outages and downed trees, Elkhart Community Schools will be postponing the first day of classes until Friday, August 13, 2021,” the district said. “All ECS schools will be closed tomorrow, August 12, 2021. We will evaluate the conditions tomorrow and post updates as needed.”
