ELKHART — Elkhart Community Schools is considering repurposing its oldest elementary building to keep up with funding cuts in part due to declining enrollment.

District leaders are proposing to repurpose Hawthorne Elementary School, which was built in 1929, into a “prekindergarten community hub” concentrating on kindergarten readiness and support for families.
