ELKHART — The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office has received reports from residents of fraudulent activity linking attempted fraud to several agency officers.

Reports claim that suspects are using the names of current officers listed on the agency’s web page to solicit funds over the phone. Citizens are being told to pay their warrants using prepaid credit cards by giving the card information over the phone.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said it does not solicit funds by telephone, so if a call like this is received, the victim should not provide any additional information to the caller.

The phone number being used by the suspects attempting to commit fraud is 574-227-2136.

The message advises that the call comes from the Elkhart County Warrants and Citations Division. This number is not affiliated with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, according to police.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
