Police call for public's help in Kilbourn Street shooting

ELKHART — A man was shot in the leg after interrupting two people who were trying to enter vehicles in the 800 block of Kilbourn Street, he told police. 

Officers were dispatched to the scene in regard to sounds of gunfire at 4:38 a.m. Thursday, according to a report from the Elkhart Police Department. 

They located a victim who had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg, police said. He was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment. Officers located evidence of gunfire at the scene.

The victim told police he interrupted two subjects entering nearby vehicles. The two subjects fled the scene on foot and fired gunshots. The victim then realized his leg had been shot and went back inside the residence and called police.

The suspects have not been identified and the case remains under investigation, police said.
