OVETT, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say three people are dead after a police chase in Jones County.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Allyson Knotts says the three died after 2 a.m. Wednesday when a tire on a Mitsubishi Montero blew out and the driver lost control, hitting a tree in southern Jones County.

Jones County Coroner Nancy Barnett says 20-year-old Kayla Lovett of Laurel, 33-year-old Josh Lovett of Laurel and 23-year-old Rustin Sims of Ovett died before they could be taken to a hospital.

Knotts couldn’t say how fast vehicles drove during the chase. It began on Laurel’s eastern edge when a deputy saw an SUV with one headlight cross the center line of the road, forcing the deputy onto the shoulder.

Knotts says the Montero’s driver didn’t yield to deputies and ran stop signs.
