Man killed in Calvin Township motorcycle crash

CALVIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 29-year-old motorcyclist from Dowagiac died Monday morning after crashing into a truck, according to Cass County Sherriff Richard Behnke.

The crash happened about 5:36 a.m. Monday at Calvin Hill Street near North Shore Drive in Cass County’s Calvin Township.

Behnke said the initial investigation indicates that the truck was turning out of a driveway to go west on Calvin Hill Street when struck by an eastbound motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, Jerry West, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is pending at Western Michigan University’s School of Medicine in Kalamazoo.

The truck driver, Kevin Carlisle, 52, of Cassopolis, was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment and released, Behnke said.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Helmet and seatbelts were used by both drivers.

Deputies were assisted on scene by LifeCare Ambulance, Penn Twp. Fire Department and True’s Towing.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact the Cass County Sheriff’s Office at 269-445-2481.
