Man arrested in Goshen after police respond to three fires

GOSHEN – Police arrested a man on drug charges while investigating three fires in Goshen late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

The Goshen Fire Department and police were called to a house fire at 311 N. 9th St. at around 11:39 p.m. and another house fire at 415 East St., half a mile north, about 15 minutes later. A boat fire was reported just after midnight at 118 W. Wilden Ave., another half mile west, according to police spokeswoman Tina Kingsbury.

Police tracked a person of interest to 209 W. Oakridge Ave., a short distance south of the boat fire, where they found him hiding in the garage. The suspect refused to comply with the officers' orders and tried to barricade the door to the room he was hiding in, so police called in the Emergency Response Team to apprehend him.

Erik Miller, 30, homeless, was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal trespass and two counts of possession of methamphetamine. He was transported to the Elkhart County Correctional Facility.

The investigation of the fires is ongoing, according to Kingsbury.
