ELKHART — Freshmen at Elkhart Community Schools shared a first-day-of-school experience unlike most of their predecessors – they weren’t surrounded by upperclassmen.

The district officially opened the doors to its new Freshman Division on Monday, with more than 1,000 ninth-graders running in all directions to find their class.
