Fire damages 2 Elkhart homes

ELKHART — A basement fire resulted in damage to two homes on Garfield Avenue over the weekend.

The call was taken at 3:25 a.m. Saturday in reference to a structure fire, according to the Elkhart Fire Department. When the five rescue trucks arrived, firefighters discovered smoke and fire coming from the basement of 1021 W. Garfield Ave.

Bystanders reported that the occupant of the home was out of town. The fire then spread to 1019 W. Garfield Ave., and occupants there were able to self-evacuate, firefighters said.

The fire at both homes was under control by around 4 a.m. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not determined, investigators said.
