Elkhart man charged with multiple child sex crimes

Robert Wilmsen

ELKHART — An Elkhart man has been accused of nine counts of sexual crimes involving three girls.

Robert Wilmsen, 40, is charged with four counts of child molesting as a Level 1 felony in connection with alleged incidents that occurred between early 2018 and early this year. He is also charged with five counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, three as a Level 4 felony and two as a Level 5 felony.

A warrant for his arrest was issued June 30 following an investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office and the Elkhart Police Department. His bond is set at $640,000 in the order for his arrest.

Each Level 1 felony count carries a punishment of up to 40 years in prison, while each Level 4 felony is punishable by up to 12 years and each Level 5 by up to six years.

Wilmsen was previously convicted of sexual misconduct with a minor, as a Class C felony, in Elkhart County in 1999 and served an eight-year sentence.

According to court documents:

Police responded to an Elkhart elementary school in May after a student reported to school staff that she had been raped. The girl, who was under 12 years old, said Wilmsen had been raping her and her sister, who was under 15 years old.

The younger girl participated in a forensic interview at the Child and Family Advocacy Center later the same day.

She said she didn’t feel like she could tell anyone because Wilmsen told her to keep it a secret. He had also offered her a bribe not to tell anyone, and told her that she, her mom and he would all get into trouble if she did.

She described several incidents involving Wilmsen and said he made her watch pornography a few times. She also claimed that a third girl, who was under 12, had also been raped by Wilmsen.

The older girl was then interviewed, and also described several incidents involving Wilmsen. She said Wilmsen had forced her to do something wrong, and that she was nervous about family being mad and that Wilmsen may hurt her.

A sexual assault examination at the hospital on the night of the interviews turned up evidence to support the girls’ claims.

Elkhart police executed a search warrant at Wilmsen’s home on June 3. They found numerous pornographic DVDs and a sex toy that one of the girls described along with other sex toys.
