Driver injuried in car-train crash near Nappanee

A train passes through Goshen along Ninth Street March 1.

NAPPANEE — A 19-year-old driver sustained severe head and internal injuries after a collision with a train about 2:41 p.m. Monday at C.R. 9 and U.S. 6, south of Nappanee, Elkhart County Police report.

The driver, Alondra Diaz, was stopped in a 2015 Chevrolet Curze facing south on the north side of the CSX railroad crossing when a train, with 104 railway cars traveling west, approached the crossing.

As the train continued to approach, police said, Diaz drove through the activited stop arm and disregarded the flashing light signals and proceded on the tracks and then stopped. This resulted in the front of the train hitting the driver's side of the car, according to a police report.

Diaz was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by MedFlight for severe injuries. Police said she was not wearing a seltbelt and no citations have been issued at this time.
