ELKHART — The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Saturday morning in Elkhart during a police chase on C. R. 5, according to information released by the Elkhart City Police Department.

The incident happened when police attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Bristol Street and C.R. 5 about 6:23 a.m. Saturday, police report.

The vehicle refused to stop and was pursued by police, according to a press release.

The pursuit went east on Bristol Street to C.R. 5 and then the suspect vehicle went north on C.R. 5 and continued north until it struck concrete barricades at the end of C.R. 5, police said.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures that were unsuccessful and the driver was pronouced dead at the scene. 

Updates and more information about the case will be issued by the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office, police said.
