The Elkhart school board voted to approve a request of 38.5 cents per $100 assessed property value, which will equal an annual tax increase of about $119 for the average homeowner. Voters will go to the polls on May 4.

ELKHART — The average homeowner in the Elkhart Community Schools district could see a tax increase of $119 per year over eight years if voters approve the district’s upcoming referendum.

Elkhart officials are asking voter approval of property tax hikes that would raise $4.9 million per year over eight years to renew its existing transportation referendum and an additional $10.35 million to bolster employee salaries and insurance benefits.
