GOSHEN — A 68-year-old man reportedly confined to his bed died in a house fire Thursday afternoon.

Charles E. Grise, an occupant of the two-story home, was unable to exit the house and succumbed to the smoke and fire, according to a report from the Goshen Police Department.

Firefighters and police officers were called to 425 N. First St. about 12:49 p.m., police said.

Emergency dispatches and other reports indicated the man was confined to a bed in the home and was unable to get out when the fire started. Firefighters found him when they entered the home, according to the report from police.

Chaplains were called to the scene to provide counsel to family members.

Investigators had not immediately determined the cause of the fire, but the blaze appears to have been accidental, according to police.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit was called to oversee the investigation because the fire involved a death, police said.
