1 dead, another airlifted from crash on U.S. 12 in Michigan northeast of Simonton Lake

The Cass County Sheriff's Department in Michigan was investigating a fatal crash at the intersection of U.S. 12 and Tharp Lake Road on Friday, June 9, 2017.

CASS COUNTY, Mich. — A Cassopolis man died and other person was seriously injured after a crash along U.S. 12 northeast of Simonton Lake on Friday.

Around 2:05 p.m., a pickup truck traveling north on Tharp Lake Road ran a stop sign and hit a sedan traveling west on U.S. 12, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Department. The scene is a few miles northeast of Simonton Lake between Edwardsburg and Union.

The driver of the car, 22-year-old David Michael Steven of Cassopolis, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the truck, whose name was not released Friday evening, was airlifted by MedFlight from the scene to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Police were still investigating late Friday whether alcohol was a factor in the crash and whether the two drivers involved were wearing seat belts.
