GOSHEN — Infant mortality in Indiana has dropped to its lowest rate in six years, but the death of any newborn is still one too many for Melanie Sizemore.

Sizemore, manager of the Healthy Beginnings division in the Elkhart County Health Department, wanted to impact the local mortality rate four years ago. The county had just seen a spike of 28 deaths in 2015, meaning an infant mortality rate of 8.8 per 1,000 live births, according to state figures.
