St. Joseph County – The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit has notified next of kin for an inmate who died Sunday.

Raymond McCarty, 52, was discovered unconscious in a medical cell at the St. Joseph County Jail and subsequently pronounced dead, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday in Fort Wayne and the death remains an active and ongoing CMHU investigation.

McCarty was discovered unconscious in his cell during a routine check. He was housed alone in a medical cell.

Around 1:40 p.m., a correctional officer was unable to get a response from McCarty and entered the cell to investigate. Upon recognizing that he was unconscious, the officer called for help from in-house medical staff, who began CPR.

South Bend Medics were also called to the scene to assist. None of the efforts by either jail medical staff or the medics were able to revive McCarty.

The CMHU was called to handle the investigation as they do for all in-custody deaths within the Jail. Jail staff compiled all videos, audio and documentation as part of the MHU investigation.

McCarty was discovered unconscious in his cell during a routine check. He was housed alone in a medical cell [whistling][whistling][whistling] I wonder if he had medical issues that should have been attended to ... I feel bad for his family.
