2 children killed in Michigan buggy crash

MARSHALL, Mich. — Two children were killed and two others were seriously injured Friday when a pickup truck rear-ended their horse-drawn carriage in Branch County's Algansee Township, police said.

The scene is about 65 miles northwest of Elkhart.

The driver of the pickup truck that rear-ended the carriage on Kelly Road just after 6 p.m. Friday was taken into custody, according to a report from Michigan State Police.

Two adults and five children were ejected from the carriage, police said. Two of the children, ages 6 and 2, were pronounced dead at the scene. A 4-year-old suffered from life-threatening injuries and a 3-year-old also suffered major injuries. A woman in the carriage also sustained serious injuries, police said.

The injured occupants of the carriage were transported to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne and Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Troopers were still investigating the crash and declined to release the names of those injured as well as the name of the driver of the pickup.

Media reports said the horse also was killed in the crash.
