ELKHART — A multifamily dwelling at 301 Bridge St. caught fire Monday leaving at least one resident’s home in possibly unlivable condition.
Nila Myrick lives on the upper floor of the two-story home and was the first to encounter the fire shortly after waking up.
“I kept smelling something," she said. “I even looked outside to see if they were working on the road because it was a tar or oil-based smell. I hadn’t even had but half a cup of coffee. (...) I walked through the apartment and I pulled the attic door off and smoke rolled down.”
Myrick believes her apartment was destroyed but was unsure of the condition of the other two, one on the main level and the other in the basement.
Elkhart City Fire Department inspector-investigator Geoff Crist said the incident was still under investigation.
