Phil Jenkins is one step closer to becoming the next mayor of Nappanee.
As of noon June 30 there were no independent or minority party candidates who submitted paperwork to file to run for Nappanee mayor, said Chris Anderson, chief deputy clerk at the Elkhart County Clerk’s office.
Jenkins, a Republican who was previously a member of the Nappanee Board of Works and Safety, is widely expected to be the next mayor of Nappanee.
Jenkins won the primary mayoral vote in May with 78 percent of the votes, beating the other Republican candidate, Patricia Wyant, according to previous reporting by The Elkhart Truth. There were no other candidates running during the primary election.
Unless a write-in candidate declares their intent to run by 12 p.m. July 6, Jenkins will run unopposed for the November election.
Current mayor Larry Thompson has served five terms as mayor, and this will be the first time in 20 years Nappanee has a new mayor.
