U.S. 20 C.R. 35 to S.R. 13 widening public hearing Northridge HS 04-21-2021

About 50 members of the public gathered Wednesday evening at Northridge High School for a public hearing on the proposed widening of U.S. 20 between C.R. 35 and S.R. 13.

MIDDLEBURY — Dozens of people interested in the widening of U.S. 20 through Middlebury showed up to a public hearing to see maps and, in some cases, to learn exactly how the project might affect their property.

Cindy Picco, a homeowner who had previously been concerned that her property might be swallowed by the two-lane street expanding to five lanes plus two shoulders, said the Indiana Department of Transportation had helped her even before the hearing to understand that, under the current design, just a small part of her property will have to go. And that’s a price she is willing to pay for a safer road.

Some of those who spoke at Wednesday's public hearing said the proposed changes do not do enough to improve safety for children who need to pass the road to go to school. The proposed changes include a pedestrian crossing with a signal.
