ELKHART — On Sept. 11, 2001, many people were staring at their TVs, trying to understand what had happened. Capt. Michial Compton, like many, thought it might have been a small plane that crashed into the first of the twin towers, not realizing that America was under attack.

But when the second plane hit and it became obvious this would be one of the worst days in modern American history, little time passed before the Elkhart firefighter dropped everything and began driving for New York.
