Bethany wait

Dr. Bethany Wait, left, gets a COVID-19 vaccine shot. The new Elkhart County health officer received her second dose of the vaccine on Friday.

GOSHEN — Newly hired Health Officer Dr. Bethany Wait comes to the position with a unique perspective on the pandemic that’s gripped the county for months, having survived an especially serious case of the virus herself.

The Goshen native and longtime family practitioner was chosen by the Elkhart County Health Board to replace Dr. Lydia Mertz at the beginning of the year. Mertz retired after serving as health officer since 2018.
