Bethany Wait at news conference

Elkhart County Health Officer Dr. Bethany Wait said the grant would have allowed the health department to do more outreach on COVID-19 and chronic diseases in minority communities.

ELKHART — The departure of Elkhart County's top health official follows a trend of resignations across the country by leaders who cite toxic conditions hampering their ability to fight the pandemic.

Health Officer Dr. Bethany Wait announced this week that she will leave her position at the end of the year. The Goshen family practitioner was chosen to replace Dr. Lydia Mertz, who retired at the end of 2020.

Thanks Dr.Wait for your service,in my opinion you did a fantastic job, considering the right wing lunatics in Elkhart county that wanted you to make health decisions based on politics.

I agree SanFran. Thank you Dr. Wait!!! For your SERVICE! This board should be ashamed. You have been awesome. Seems the board has it's own agenda (as usual)- not willing to listen to the expert - certainly NOT servants!. This lily white board would not want a well educated expert to do what is best for the people of Elkhart County - they would rather run anyone with an intelligent mind out. Thank you for your work and please know that this board does not represent many if not most of the people of Elkhart County. Only "their own kind". They are out of touch with anything other than their own agenda. Seems many boards these days have this disease. Ego and politics- rather than experts and intelligent thinking - They do not LISTEN- rather pre-decided based on own biases. Thank you Dr. Wait for your excellent work. It is a shame how you were treated. You were the right person for the position- unfortunately you were not allowed to do your job and when you tried they didn't listen as it is not aligned with their warped (non-expert) opinions. Money returned? programs denied? Citizens denied? Maybe they will get the lemming that they want. The Board is sad and embarrassing.
