Jeff Majerek, interim Elkhart County chief public defender, speaks to county council about the request.

GOSHEN — County officials are denying a request for two new public defenders over fear that, even with reimbursement, criminal justice costs could snowball.

Jeff Majerek, interim chief public defender, presented the request to the Elkhart County Council, asking to add positions for two lawyers and a clerk to help reduce the caseload per attorney. He also asked for an increase in pay for the chief defender position from $122,000 to $151,000, which the Indiana Public Defender Commission has said would be on par with prosecutor salaries.

You would think Vickie Becker, ran the Defenders office as well,Her office pretty gets much gets what she wants.

The prosecutor's office is supported through state funds! The prosecutor is an elective office. The public defenders office is supported through local funds. It is an appointed office. Comparison of the 2 differing jobs and there allowed funds is apples and oranges! I can tell you this... according to , Elkhart County's public defender was paid $115,539 in 2019! I have no info for the prosecutor's wage!
