GOSHEN — A $3 million grant for health literacy was rejected by county officials following an outpouring of vitriol from anti-vaxxers and other science skeptics.

The Elkhart County Council voted unanimously Saturday against a $995,698 appropriation of grant money for the hiring of six community health workers who would have focused on Black, Hispanic and Amish populations. It would have been the first installment of a three-year, $3 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the Elkhart County Health Department received.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” I.A. History will not be kind to this GOP lead county administration….winter is coming…me thinks covid and karma will be back shortly.

Hmmm..... $3 million more taxpayer's money. Is it to combat covid? If so? No one pays for those shots. 3 segments of our county is mentioned for targeting, black, hispanic and Amish! It's free. No cost. Nothing. We already paid for it! Many drive is testing sites have be set up. You can go to ANY clinic. Testing and shots are free. The Hispanic community has had at least 2 free drive thru shot programs. i walked in to Elkhart clinic and said I wanted the shot. Half hour later I'm out of there . Same with my second. Some pharmacies offer the jab. The clinic on Simpson street is fee . Transportation can be arranged. No excuses! No need for $3 million more to be spent in Elkhart County!

Apparently an ignorance virus has infected the Council. I expected more from them, but am not surprised.

Nothing like not investing your workforce, sick days cost business big money, especially in a tight labor force,Elkhart BBB should be all over this.

Agreed. They treat us like we're just property that can be replaced.

Don't confuse them with the facts same old nonsense from our Elkhart County Councilman concerning the grant. Why would they want to consent to the health and safety option for minorities? This continued abuse of power in Elkhart County continues to diminish out quality of life.

Turning down an opportunity to provide health and safety options for those in the community? wow. just wow.

This is the best example of how high the level of mental illness is in the area. People are pathologically paranoid about everything. This is an indication of how poor the over all health of our community is. If you are a business owner, you need to consider the ramifications of this. How long can our local economy continue to advance before enough people have fallen into such a pathological state that it begins to break down?
