GOSHEN — Elkhart County has launched a rent and utilities assistance program to help families stay in their homes if they face COVID-19-related financial hardships.

The $6.1 million program is funded out of $25 billion for local governments that Congress included in the year-end relief bill. It provides a maximum of $1,500 per month and covers up to 12 months, past or future, in rent, utilities or internet service for eligible renters.

So this aid money is available only to renters? Property taxpayers/homeowners are not qualified? So approaching almost full employment in Elkhart County and a substantial amount of the population can't find work? During the work week there is a steady stream of traffic east and west bound to and from Elkhart to Bristol and Middlebury! It starts about 5 AM! There are many ads on Facebook for labor in Elkhart County! And not minimum wage or low range wages. Starting @ $15.

Another public give-a-way that will be abused by the usual suspects, paid for by people who pay taxes. What a country.
