GOSHEN — County leaders approved a pay increase for the head of the public defender’s office in order to stay eligible for millions of dollars in reimbursements.

The Elkhart County Council on Saturday voted 5-2 to raise the salary for the chief public defender to $156,125. The $35,000 increase was the last piece needed to meet the standards for 40 percent reimbursement from the Indiana Public Defender Commission, council heard.
