Council approves funds for HEA despite brainwashing fears

Horizon Education Alliance President Brian Wiebe speaks to the Elkhart County Council on Saturday.

GOSHEN — County officials approved $100,000 in funding for Horizon Education Alliance after listening to critics vilify the teaching of character development as a plot to “indoctrinate” children.

Elkhart County Council on Saturday voted to award $100,000 each to HEA, the Center for Community Justice and the Council on Aging. The three nonprofits have received similar amounts of money in recent years, which comes from a special project fund that uses landfill tipping fees.
