Two apartments damaged in fire

ELKHART — The occupants of two apartments were safely evacuated after a structure fire burned through the roof of one of the apartments  around 11:24 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28.

According to a report provided by the Elkhart Fire Department, crews responded to Farmington Hills Apartments, located in the 1000 block of Mishawaka Road. The first unit on scene reported smoke coming from the roof on the northside of the apartment building.  

 The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen, and is accidental in nature. As noted in the report, when crews entered the upstairs apartment, they found fire in the kitchen that extended up into the attic space above.

There were no injuries reported.

The occupants of the apartment in which the fire occurred and the occupants of the downstairs apartment were assisted by The American Red Cross.

The downstairs apartment sustained water damage from fire suppression operations.
