ELKHART COUNTY — More than a dozen fire departments responded to a fire at a local manufacturing plant on Wednesday afternoon.

The building, owned by Elkhart-based company Cana Cabinetry, was destroyed during the fire.

At around 3:30 p.m., Cleveland Fire Department crews were dispatched to 29194 Phillips Street in Elkhart County, said Cleveland Township Assistant Fire Chief Mike Graham.

Graham said crews from Saint Joseph, Elkhart, and Cass County, Michigan were dispatched to the scene to help contain the fire.

During the incident, two Osolo Township firefighters were injured, one from a ground level fall and the other from frostbite.

The fire, Graham said, left the building a “total loss,” as flames continued for nearly eight hours after it started.

“We’re just very appreciative of all the fire departments that came out in the cold to help us out,” Graham said.

Cleveland Township Fire Department is handling the investigation of the incident, including its cause, which is currently unknown, Graham said.

The building contained several flammable objects like lacquer, acetone and wood.

Cana Cabinetry is a sister company of Elkhart-based RV manufacturer Patrick Industries.

When contacted, Patrick Industries declined to comment on the incident.
