MASON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police say an Elkhart man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his father to death on State Line Road Monday evening.
A 32-year-old, Joseph Craigo, is accused of stabbing Alan Craigo, 59, several times inside a home in the 16000 block of State Line Road in Cass County, Michigan's Mason Township. Alan Craigo was pronounced dead after the incident, according to our news partners at ABC57.
Investigators say Joseph and Alan Craigo were arguing before the stabbing and Joseph Craigo left right after the attack, then returned to the scene. Alan Craigo's wife called 911 to report the stabbing, then Joseph Craigo called 911 a few minutes later, according to Michigan State Police investigators.
Joseph Craigo was at the residence when Michigan State Police troopers arrived on the scene around 8:20 p.m. and he was arrested on the spot, ABC57 reported. Police declined to say why Joseph Craigo left and returned to the scene.
"I do know why he left the scene but he had told me during the interview he felt it was self-defense and then he returned back to the scene he also called 911 and waited for the police to arrive," Detective Sgt. Fabian Suarez of the Michigan State Police Niles post told ABC57. "The spouse called 911 first and then (the suspect) did make a call a few minutes later to central, to dispatch."
Joseph Craigo was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on charges of open murder, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, assault with a dangerous weapon and interfering with electronic communications, ABC57 reported. If convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
