House fire claims life

ELKHART _ An early morning house fire in a mobile home claimed the life of an Elkhart resident.

The Elkhart County Coroners' Office was dispatched to the 2900 block of Woodsage Street in Elkhart, Thursday morning at about 3 a.m. after a body was found by firefighters on the scene, according to a press release issued Thursday morning.

"We have one deceased person who is unidentified at this time," Elkhart County Coroner James Elliott said. As of press time Thursday, the deceased person had not been named.

Elliott said an autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Nov 24 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

"We have no further information at this time," Elliott said.

According to a fire incident report provided by the Elkhart Fire Department, crews were dispatched at 12:59 a.m. to the single family residence for a structure fire. Upon arrival of the first unit on scene, flames were observed coming through the roof.

"The fire was extinguished quickly and without difficulty from the exterior, due to part of the floor being burned through," Investigator Aaron Gerber noted in the report. "During fire suppression operations one deceased person was found."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
