ELKHART — An Elkhart man is wanted on three felonies related to child molesting.
The warrant issued April 11 charges 53-year-old Michael Harvey with two counts of child molesting as a Level 1 felony as well as one Level 4 felony count of a sex crime involving a victim under age 16. The warrant was issued following an Elkhart Police investigation into alleged incidents that occurred between July and August 2018.
Bond is set at $310,000 in the warrant, which was issued out of Elkhart County Superior Court 3.
A Level 1 felony is punishable by up to 40 years in prison and a Level 4 felony by up to 12 years.
According to court documents:
Police responded to Elkhart General Hospital on Nov. 29 for a report of a child who had been molested.
The mother of the girl, who is under 10 years old, told officers that she had asked her daughter why she was sad and the girl disclosed that Harvey had touched her inappropriately.
The girl told her mother that Harvey told her to keep it a secret and that he would buy her a toy.
During a later forensic interview at the Child and Family Advocacy Center, the girl recounted what allegedly happened and how Harvey told her not to tell anyone or else they would “both go somewhere really bad.” She said it happened on numerous occasions.
In a voluntary statement to police, Harvey claimed that the girl had previously disclosed being molested and that he wanted to see what she knew about sex.
He indicated that what the girl had described in the forensic interview was only simulated, but that he wanted it to “be lifelike and real.”
