ELKHART — After seven months of construction, one of Elkhart’s main thoroughfares reopened to traffic on Tuesday morning, with city officials touting the safety improvements it provides for drivers and pedestrians.

Benham Avenue, on Elkhart’s south side, underwent a $2.75 million makeover that included a shift from four to three lanes, added bike paths on both sides and enhances safety for pedestrians to walk alongside the road, city officials said.
