Monthly contra dance set for June 1

Woody and Marcia McKenzie perform at a contra dance in Richmond, Virginia. The couple will be at the monthly event June 1 in Goshen.

GOSHEN — Goshen Community Contra Dancing will host its monthly contra dance Saturday, June 1, in downtown Goshen, featuring caller Dwayne Johnson of Elkhart.

Music will be performed by the McKenzies, a husband and wife duo from Virginia who deliver a unique blend of contemporary and original folk and traditional music from southern Appalachia and the British Isles.

No partner is necessary and instruction is given by the caller for all dances throughout the evening. Dances become more intricate as the evening unfolds so participants should come early to be well prepared for the advancing challenges.

Admission is $8 for the general public and $5 for students, with children 11 and younger admitted free.

The dance is held in a large wood-floor gym at First United Methodist Church, 214 South Fifth St., Goshen. Participants should wear light clothing and shoes for active movement. A beginner’s workshop begins at 7 p.m. and the dancing picks up at 7:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by GO Dancing!, a nonprofit organization. More information is available at More information about the musicians is available at To watch the McKenzie’s play, hear a caller call a dance, and view contra dancers in action, people can visit
