The unemployment rate in Indiana has fallen to 5 percent, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

ELKHART — Indiana’s unemployment rate fell to 5 percent in October, moving closer to figures that could be considered normal.

In the spring, as much of the economy was shut down, thousands lost their jobs, and Elkhart County was hard hit because of its high level of manufacturing. In April alone, 17,546 Elkhart County residents submitted unemployment claims. That is more than twice the number from the worst month during the financial crisis more than a decade ago.
