Dollar General

The Elkhart City Council rejected a rezoning petition that would have allowed Dollar General to add a 10th store in the Elkhart area.

ELKHART — Dollar General’s hopes of building another store in Elkhart, at C.R. 6 and Stryker Street, were crushed at City Hall this week, as a City Council majority voted against a proposed rezoning.

Dollar General was requesting a rezoning of the 1.35-acre parcel to change it from a limited manufacturing district to a community business district, which would allow them to build a small grocery store.

I don't really know how much residential is in that specific area, but it seems like calling it a food desert is a stretch. I don't think we need any more dollar stores, the claim about fresh produce could take a long time to implement. The area that Martin's left vacant seems to be much more of a problem for the city as far as food access is concerned.
