ELKHART — Cassie Shelton, a 2014 Elkhart Central High School graduate, has signed to continue her academic and softball careers at Bethel College in Mishawaka.
Shelton, a 5-foot-7 pitcher, missed the 2014 high school season because of an anterior cruciate ligament injury. She did serve as a team captain and earned her fourth letter in the sport for coach Brent Bardo's squad.
As a junior in 2013, Shelton was named honorable mention all-Northern Indiana Conference. She helped the Blue Blazers to city championships in 2011 and 2012.
Shelton also earned one letter each in volleyball and swimming while being involved in youth group, Elkhart Central High School Student Council, orchestra, PEERS, Move 2 Stand and art club.
Bethel, an NAIA program and Crossroads League member, is coached by Megan Smalley-Hastings.
"I’ve learned that God’s plans rarely turns out the way we want them to, but He does what is best for us," said Shelton. "I may have missed my senior season, but going through an ACL surgery and now through the recovery, I have learned so much about myself.
"I have realized how Bethel is exactly where I belong not only because of softball, but because I will have a daily reminder of God’s love. I have been given the wonderful opportunity to have a softball family filled with young women who share my beliefs and the same passion for softball."
The Pilots went 24-22 overall and 18-12 in the Crossroads in 2014.
