Northridge can't contain Gary West Side's speed in regional semifinal

Gary West freshman Dana Evans posted 35 points in the Cougars' winning efforts over Northridge.

MISHAWAKA — Northridge threw the kitchen sink at Gary West Side, but Dana Evans quickly danced around it.

Man-to-man, two-three zone, even diamond and one.

Coach Doug Springer emptied the defensive playbook in attempts to contain Evans, a freshman guard who already has a verbal offer from Michigan State, but nothing could slow her on her 35-point march.

Evans and the Cougars (18-3) closed the book on Northridge's historical season with a 72-56 win in the Penn 4A regional semifinals.

"She's very, very, very good," Springer said of Evans. "If she keeps improving her game, her name is going to be all over the state of Indiana by the time she's a senior. We pride ourselves on our defense, and what she did to shred our defense, that's a pretty special player."

The Raiders (18-5) kept pace for a quarter, leading by five at one point in the first quarter. But Evans posted 15 points in the second quarter to give Gary West a five-point lead at halftime.

From there, the Cougars' momentum built alongside Northridge's frustration. Facing an 18-point deficit in the third quarter, the Raiders clawed back within eight early in the fourth.

But Amari Feguson sank a 3-pointer to give Gary West another spark, and Northridge never got close again.

Along with her game-high 35 points, Evans finished with six assists and seven rebounds. Mikaela Zook led Northridge with 17 points, while Morgan Miller chipped in 12.

In a season that saw the program's first-ever Northern Lakes Conference championship and sectional title, Springer can't be too disappointed the storybook year has come to an end.

"There is no reason for us to hang our heads," he said. "We can't hang our head. We got beat by a better team. We put up 56 points and played pretty well, but we got beat by a better team."
