 Kyle Sears, then an assistant, talks to a player coming to the Elkhart Memorial bench during a recent season. Sears is the first Memorial boys basketball head coach to graduate from the school, and the first hired without previous varsity head coaching experience.

He’s a rarity as a home-grown head coach and as a head coach with no such varsity experience, let alone both those things.
