Jims give up a gimme to get Central; Goshen hoop slate also out

There’s just one changed opponent on the Jimtown High School boys basketball schedule from a season ago, but that’s one more than Goshen’s schedule features.

The Jimmies’ 2013-14 slate was recently shared by athletic director Nathan Dean.

It includes a date with the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers, which is no surprise, given that we covered that information in June while looking over the Blazers’ schedule.

The two Elkhart County programs will be meeting for the first time in 26 years when they face off Saturday, Feb. 1 at North Side Gym.

Central replaces what’s proven a Jimmie gimme over the years, Lakeland Christian Academy.

Jimtown and LCA met annually each of the last 12 seasons, with the Jims winning all 12 meetings. Eleven of those 12 were openers, too, and 10 of those Jimtown victories came by at least 22 points. The other two came by eight and six points.

Jimtown’s new opener becomes Howe, on the road Tuesday, Dec. 3, up from a mid-January meeting a year ago.

The home opener will be Friday, Dec. 6 against Clinton Christian.

The Jims went 7-14 last winter during Ron Dietz’s first season in charge, up from the previous winter’s 4-17.

As for Goshen’s schedule, posted on the school’s website, all 20 opponents remain precisely the same as a year ago, with only the sites changing.

In fact, even the order’s nearly the same, and would be virtually the same if last season’s opener against Marian hadn’t been moved back due to Marian’s extended football playoff run.

The Redskins intend again to open against the Knights, on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at Marian.

It’s the first of three straight road games, followed by four straight home games from Dec. 7 to 21.

Penn and South Bend St. Joseph will again be Goshen’s NIC/NLC Shootout opponents. The venues for those game will be Northridge on Friday, Dec. 27 and Penn the next night.

Coach Brian Bechtel’s Redskins are coming off a 14-8 mark that was the program’s best in 10 years last winter. Three starters have graduated, led by All-Area second-teamer Sam Stegelmann, but Brady Bechtel, the coach’s son, is among the returnees after starting at point guard as a freshman last season.

Again, you can find Goshen’s schedule on the school’s website, while Jimtown’s is below.
